Nearly 50,000 people apply for legal name changes annually, and for a variety of reasons. We can make this as simple a process as possible and fulfill a change that means a lot to our clients. This process only takes around three months to officiate and only requires a few steps. It does however involve filing petitions and attending a hearing. With the assistance of a lawyer, navigating the procedural law at hand and having representation in court will ensure a swift completion.
To change a name in Pennsylvania, a Petition must be filed with the PA Court of Common Pleas where the Petitioner lives. Each county in Pennsylvania has forms and guidelines. In Bucks County, the Name Change Petition is filed and includes Final Order Charge and Search and Certification of Name Change Petition.
From there, the Court forwards the petition and fingerprint card to the State Police to check for any criminal record. Within 60 days, the State Police will report any information they find to the Court. From there, the Court will process entering an Order of Approval of Name Change.
